Portugal Marks Record Growth in Online Gaming Revenue

Portugal’s online gambling market managed to set a new record in Q4 of 2025, with revenues reaching €337.6 million.

The online gambling scene in Portugal set another record with revenues hitting €337.6 million in Q4 of 2025. To date, it is the highest quarterly figure reported, and Portuguese online casinos are the main driver behind the surge.

Online casinos lead the way

There’s no denying the iGaming industry in Portugal is booming. Online casinos are quick to prove that with a revenue of €214 million and an impressive 15.9% year-on-year increase.

The Q4 numbers also point towards an 8.4% increase from Q3 in the same year, which makes us interested to see what the Q1 to Q4 of this one will reveal.

Overall, online slots dominated and made 80.4% of all casino stakes. In total, casinos brought in €5.9 billion, a massive 14.8% increase year-on-year.

Sports betting on the rebound

Sports might not have stolen the spotlight, but they remain a big part of the action. Sports betting still brought in €123.6 million, which is a 10.6% year-on-year decrease.

Still, that is a 23.9% increase from Q3 in 2024. It might not be fully recovered as of yet, but stats do indicate slow growth.

Football dominated the slips with approximately three out of every four bets placed on matches. It accounted for 75.6% of all bets. Tennis (10.6%) and basketball (9.6%) followed at a distance.

Despite the temporary dip, these figures speak of a strong bounce back and a solid increase in interest.

More players in the game

At the end of 2025, there were 4.9 million registered gambling accounts in Portugal. This is a 4.5% increase from 2024.

It’s amazing that in just one quarter, over 231,000 new accounts were opened. But on the flip side, a total of 239,000 accounts were closed.

Despite the negative net for this period, this ultimately shows the market is heading into a more mature phase with better offerings and more stable protection for players.

What to expect in 2026

Portugal’s gambling regulations are incredibly strict and overseen by the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ). Many industry experts state that market resilience is proof of effective regulation.

However, recent reforms may include a couple of interesting changes, such as new betting formats that will elevate sports betting. Potential slot restrictions could also lead to a dip in slot interest.

Another big change is the addition of the centralised portal for self-exclusion from casinos that allows you to block yourself from all licensed sites in one go.

It will be interesting to see how these changes impact the overall growth of the industry and their effect on quarterly statistics.

With online casinos in Portugal as the main growth driver, it’s clear there’s a strong demand despite the strict regulations. Sports betting may not have bounced back completely, but the new betting types may give this sector the boost it needs.
