Denmark Blocks 178 iGaming Sites in Unprecedented Crackdown

Denmark has blocked 178 illegal gambling sites in its biggest crackdown yet, sending a strong message to operators targeting Danish players.

Denmark has taken its biggest swing yet at unlicensed gambling operators. On 26 June 2025, the court in Frederiksberg ruled in favour of the Danish Gambling Authority (DGA), allowing it to block access to 178 gambling websites that were offering services to Danish users without a valid licence. It’s the largest single enforcement action of its kind since the DGA first began site blocking back in 2012.

Among the affected platforms is BetUS, which is a name many gambling fans will recognise, but the vast majority of the list is made up of lesser-known or duplicate sites. In fact, 76 of them appear to be clones of the Verde Casino brand, which shows a clear effort to multiply reach while avoiding detection.

Thanks to the court’s green light, Danish telecom providers are now required to restrict access to these sites using DNS blocking. This method works by intercepting connection attempts and redirecting them to a warning page from the regulator that clearly states the site is illegal under Danish law.

A shift in strategy

This isn’t just a numbers game. The decision shows a real change in how Denmark is tackling illegal online gambling. Until recently, the DGA only brought one case like this to court per year. In 2023, when the DGA changed its policy to better respond to the rising number of illegal casinos that are targeting Danish players.

From 2024 onwards, the DGA committed to bringing blocking cases twice a year. The result? A faster, more decisive process that allows them to shut down unauthorised operators with far greater reach and speed.

This latest ruling brings the total number of blocked sites to 616 since the initiative began, but it’s the scale and frequency that signal a new regulatory tone.

Detect, notify, and block

While the legal ruling is important, there's also a lot of groundwork that happens long before the official court date. The DGA uses smart monitoring tools, according to the Danish gambling regulations, to scan for websites that may be operating without a valid licence.

These tools scan sites based on particular criteria, such as:

Is customer support in Danish?
Are local payment methods accepted?
Are betting options for local sports available?

Once a site is flagged, the operator is given the chance to shut down voluntarily. If they don’t, the DGA takes the matter to court, and telecoms are instructed to implement the DNS block.

According to DGA director Anders Dorph, these steps are crucial in upholding market standards and protecting consumers. “We’re better equipped than ever to deal with the challenge of illegal gambling,” he said, highlighting both improved detection systems and a more streamlined court process.

Why it matters

The difference between licensed and unlicensed operators starts with paperwork. But it's not just that. Safe and licensed casinos in Denmark follow tough rules about responsible gambling, anti-money laundering, and customer protection. On the other hand, sites without licenses will operate outside these regulations, and this will put you at risk of data breaches, fraudulent practices, or even loss of funds.

With this crackdown on illegal casino sites, the DGA looks to push players towards safer gambling environments. From Steam-linked games to casino clones, anything that looks like it’s targeting Danish players is now firmly in the regulator’s sights.

Looking ahead

This ruling may be a major step, but the DGA isn’t likely to slow down. Denmark looks set to continue tightening its grip on unauthorised online gambling, especially with those policy changes already in motion and court cooperation firmly in place.

In a market where consumer protection is king and digital footprints are hard to hide, unlicensed operators may find it increasingly difficult to slip through the cracks. And for Danish players? The message is just as clear: stick to licensed sites or expect interruptions ahead.
