Playtech vs Evolution: The iGaming war of the year

Playtech has been revealed as the mystery accuser of Evolution, which can lead to a big corporate war.

In the world of online betting, we’ve grown accustomed to new and interesting developments taking place every day. But a war between industry giants has got to be the cherry on the cake. The news of the year!

It was recently revealed that Playtech was the mystery accuser of Evolution, leaving everyone on the edge of their seat for the brewing legal war.

Mystery accuser revealed

Back in December 2020, Playtech hired Black Cube to produce a report about Evolution. The report included accusations against Evolution and no mention of the company that ordered it.

This took a while to unfold and even ex-Mossad secret agents were involved. And now that all parties and information is known, pressure and stakes are high. Here’s a quick timeline of the events to get you up to speed before we look at more context and possible consequences.

  • November 2021 - Nearly a year later, the report was released via the law firm Calcagni & Kanefsky LLP, which accused Evolution of operating in sanctioned markets, sending laptops to VIPs in prohibited regions, and accepting cash payments. The report was sent to regulators in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as to several media outlets, including Bloomberg.
  • December 2021 - Evolution filed a lawsuit against Calcagni & Kanefsky and the anonymous entities behind the report. The lawsuit was for defamation, trade libel, tortious interference with prospective economic advantage, fraud, and other illegal conduct.
  • February 2024 - The Pennsylvania and New Jersey gaming regulators closed their investigations into Evolution, with no corrective action implemented.
  • February 2025 - The New Jersey Superior Court told Calcagni & Kanefsky to disclose the name of its anonymous client and the report’s author.
  • April 2025 - Black Cube’s name was revealed, but the firm stated that they did not know the identity of the client responsible for the commissioning of the report.
  • June 2025 - Evolution amended its complaint to add Black Cube as a defendant.
  • August 2025 - The Black Cube founder, Avi Yanus, filed an affidavit with what he claimed was new evidence. All in an effort to legitimise the 2021 report.
  • September 2025 - The New Jersey Superior Court ordered Black Cube to reveal its client’s identity. The court also called the 2021 report objectively baseless.
  • October 2025 - Playtech was revealed as the client that commissioned the report back in 2021. Evolution already stated that its complaint will be amended to include Playtech.

Updates to the Evolution vs Black Cube case!

Updates in a major case like this one are rolling in every minute. After it was announced that Playtech offered Black Cube a £500k “success fee” over Evolution's license, we have gathered that the live casino giant has now lost its sanctions bid against Black Cube.

Evolution argued that BC hasn't provided the entire documentation needed for the case. The company also tried to get the judge to continue the deposition of Avi Yanus. However, the court rejected Evolution's appeal as well as its protective order against Black Cube's discovery one.

Black Cube has also successfully managed to protect its agents from being unmasked and their identities revealed with a court order.

War is brewing

According to sources, high-level executives at Playtech were in direct communication with Black Cube. This confirms the longstanding suspicions that the attack was orchestrated with the intention of destabilising Evolution’s market dominance.

And now, with the identity of the accuser revealed, we can expect the battle to shift gears from discovery to defamation. Evolution will most likely pursue damages for reputational harm along with the $14.3 billion in capital that was wiped from its market after the release of the report.

Playtech’s name is being added to the complaint, and it’s likely that they will expect billions in damages. On top of that, this may result in Playtech facing investigations from its gaming regulators because of its covert tactics.

As for investors, we can expect that both game providers will be under close watch, and while Evolution’s stock can rebound, Playtech may be faced with volatility and heavy drops.

Other operators may choose to take sides, which will also result in complete competitive reshuffling and fracture alliances.

Who’s got the upper hand?

The war has just begun, and while it looks like Evolution is positioned for victory, there’s no telling what strategic steps Playtech may implement.

The good news for Evolution is that it has been cleared up by regulators and has both legal momentum and public sympathy. Not to mention, it maintains its role as a market leader in live casino game creation.

Playtech, on the other hand, sits with possible regulatory penalties, legal exposure from defamation claims and of course, major reputation damage.

At the end of the day, this comes as a wake-up call for the industry. It points directly towards the growing use of corporate espionage, the impact and power of reputation and the importance of transparency in regulated markets.

This war is one that will be watched closely by the entire industry, and no matter who comes out as victorious, one thing is certain: the iGaming landscape will never be the same again.
