Denmark saw a 25.1% gambling revenue jump in August, marking a massive increase from August last year.
August was a massive month for Denmark as the gambling sector saw a large increase in revenue. Data released by the national regulator shows an impressive 25.1% year-on-year increase.
The big rise in revenue is due to the huge growth in both sports betting and gambling at Danish online casinos. The increase marked a strong change from previous months and set new goals for the rest of the year.
Sportsbetting influence
Sports betting came out as a standout performer. Only this sector brought in DKK 225 million in revenue (a 53.4% jump from last August) according to the data from Spillemyndigheden. It is also marked as the highest monthly total for sports betting of 2025 to date.
The mobile platforms were dominating, contributing DKK 160 million (71.3%) to the overall total. Whereas betting via computer brought in DKK 37 million, and retail outlets contributed DKK 27 million.
From this massive spike, it’s clear that mobile betting is a bettor preference thanks to the convenience and mobile-friendly apps. It will be interesting to see if the totals can be held in other, less sports-populated seasons with fewer promotional campaigns running.
iGaming domination
Online casinos did not disappoint, generating DKK 361 million this August, which is a clear 20.7% year-on-year increase from August 2024.
In the online gambling sector, online slots were the top revenue generator, drawing in DKK 284 million (78.6%). Other popular games in this sector included:
Blackjack (DKK 22.5 million)
Roulette (DKK 16.9 million)
Poker (DKK 8.6 million)
Bingo (DKK 8.2 million)
An additional DKK 21.1 million was brought in through other games. It's clear that online slots are a firm favourite among Danish players thanks to the wide variety, diverse themes, features, and game styles.
With the revenue increase in other types of games, it also shows that the interest and diversity in gaming experience vary.
Land-based gambling brings in mixed results
In the land-based gambling sector, we don’t see the same impressive increase as the online gambling sector. Where online slots saw a rapid increase, land-based slot machines saw a 0.7% drop in year-on-year revenue, bringing in only DKK 95 million.
The stats indicated that DKK 76.8 million came from machines in gaming halls and DKK 18.7 million came from terminals in restaurants.
On the other hand, land-based casinos saw a 4.9% overall revenue rise to DKK 31 million. It’s the 5th month that casino earnings have been above the DKK 30 million threshold, indicating a steady recovery for physical gaming venues. Land-based bingo remained stable with its DKK 2 million in revenue.
Responsible gambling spotlight
According to Spillemyndigheden, the ROFUS self-exclusion scheme reported that 63,488 people registered by the end of August. This includes 41,362 permanent exclusions and 22,126 temporary exclusions.
ROFUS allows players to block themselves from gambling activities, and since its inception in 2012, 65.2% of registrants opted for permanent self-exclusion. Whereas 16.2% chose the six-month option, making it the next most popular choice.
The stats show that awareness is on the rise, and more people are using the available responsible gambling measures according to Danish gambling regulations, even as the industry is expanding.
Denmark's future focus
It looks like a strong trajectory for the gambling industry, especially iGaming and online sports betting. Mobile sports betting and online slots are the focus, and interest in other game types is growing.
Land-based gaming, on the other hand, has lower stats but also shows an overall improvement. And responsible gambling stats show players are becoming more aware and implementing the necessary steps to maintain control of their habits.
The industry is curious to see what next month’s stats will reveal, and if the revenue rise will hold in the months to come.
