India Sets New Stricter Rules for Online Gambling Regulation

India has new rules for online gambling, banning real-money games and presenting a new oversight authority. Here's what changed and what it means for players.

India’s gambling market has entered a new era since 1 May 2026, when a new nationwide regulatory framework came into force.

The updated Indian gambling regulations allow fewer cash-play opportunities but come with a new oversight body, clearer rules and stronger safeguards.

What the framework covers

The new framework is one of the most restrictive in the region. Real money games are out. Social games and esports are still permitted, though they will need to register under the new authority.

India banned real-money games in 2025 with the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, following an estimated $2.3 billion in losses by local players. As a consequence, everybody was left wondering what will happen to Indian online casinos and the entire market.

With the new Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, real money games are still banned, a new authority is created, and stricter operating rules now apply.

The goal is player protection, and according to the Indian government, the price to pay is a much narrower gaming market, with little to no opportunity for cash play.

A ban on real money games

One of the biggest changes that will drastically impact local players is the ban on real-money games. This means any games you have to pay to enter, deposit funds, or play for cash prizes. This covers all popular game formats like online poker, rummy, or even fantasy sports.

The reasoning behind this move is to reduce gambling risk and protect players from potential financial harm. As a player, this means the sites and apps you’ve frequented to date will no longer be the same.

They will either shut down completely or change their offering, e.g., as social casinos, to comply with the new legislation.

So what can you play?

The good news is that not all gambling is off the table. The framework will still allow esports tournaments and social games. However, some of these games will need to register under the new authority.
