Drake and Stake Face Another Lawsuit for Misleading Online Users

There’s nothing that quite says ‘welcome to the new year’ like being caught up in a mounting legal storm.

A new class action lawsuit filed in Virginia has Canadian rapper Drake and crypto casino giant Stake down for orchestrating a scheme involving the manipulation of music streaming figures, deceptive marketing and illegal gambling.

With the case lodged in the Eastern District of Virginia on 31 December 2025, there could be massive repercussions for the rapper and the crypto casino, not to mention implications that impact both the entertainment and online gambling industries.

The Virginia class action

The lawsuit is focused on Stake.us, the US-facing version of Stake.com, along with Drake, Adin Ross (a popular streamer), and associate George Nguyen.

According to the plaintiffs, Stake.us was created to bypass federal and state gambling laws. It presents as a ‘social casino’ but still enables real-money wagering through credit bundles that are pegged to the US dollar.

The complaint states that users were misled into thinking they’re engaging in entertainment-only gaming. But in reality, they were gambling with real money, which is a violation of Virginia consumer protection law and federal statutes. This includes the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations (RICO) Act.

Drake’s involvement

Drake has been a longtime ambassador of Stake and has been accused of livestreaming gambling sessions funded by Stake rather than his own funds.

According to the allegations, the broadcasts were misleading and led fans into thinking the rapper was putting his own funds at risk, while encouraging them to do the same.

The lawsuit also focuses on Stake’s internal tipping and transfer features, which are believed to be acting as an unregulated money transmission system. Hiding the flow of funds between participants.

Music streaming manipulation allegations

One of the most shocking claims surrounds Drake’s music career. The plaintiffs allege that proceeds from Stake.us were used to finance both networks and streaming farms to artificially inflate play counts of their songs on big platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

The filing states that payments routed through Stake.us funded third-party operators who, in turn, manipulated charts, recommendations algorithms and royalty calculations.

Six-figure transfers and promotional giveaways have been brought up as evidence of such concealed transactions.

If proven true, this accusation stands to shake the credibility of digital music metrics, which would raise questions on how streaming numbers play a role in influencing industry awards, rankings and artist revenues.

Not the only lawsuit

The Virginia Case is not the first Stake is facing, similar lawsuits against Stake, Drake and Adin Ross have been filed in various other states, including Missouri in October 2025.

These cases argue that Stake’s US operations are blurring the lines between social gaming and real money gambling. This poses a threat to player safety with no proper regulatory oversight.

The plaintiffs in Virginia are looking for class certification, treble damages under RICO, restitution, and redistribution of profits. As well as injunctive relief to stop Stake.us operations within the US. The case is still at an early stage, and allegations still need to be tested in court.

Impact of it all

The case highlights big issues and future complications within three industries. In the world of iGaming, it puts the focus on marketing practices and the growing scrutiny of crypto casinos.

This might lead to regulators pushing for tighter controls on platforms that are still operating in grey areas or illegal casinos.

Drake’s involvement highlights the risks that celebrities are facing when endorsing gambling. And if the allegations are proven, it could completely destroy his brand while also raising questions regarding the accountability that comes with influencer-driven promotions.

In the world of music streaming, the claims of artificial inflation could break trust in all digital platforms, which could lead to stricter monitoring of play counts and royalty distribution. This wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.
