Alberta is set to become the second CA province to regulate iGaming, with new market & advertising rules to launch in early 2026.
After Ontario led the game, the Canadian province of Alberta has also officially confirmed plans to roll out a regulated iGaming market in early 2026.
Positioning itself as the second province to embrace a legal framework for private online casinos and sportsbooks, Canadian online gambling is on the verge of another big shift.
Alberta prepares to open regulated online casino market
Alberta's Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, Dale Nally, made the announcement during the Canadian Gaming Summit in Toronto. He clearly stated that the groundwork is nearly complete, and the province is ready to move forward.
Online casinos in Ontario have set a benchmark for other provinces looking to modernise their gaming frameworks.
"In terms of timeframes, I can't give you a month, but I can tell you early next year, we're going to be cutting the ribbon on our iGaming Alberta," Nally commented.
This announcement follows the recent passage of Bill 48, which is also known as the iGaming Alberta Act. The act legally clears the way for private operators to join the province’s online gambling space.
New ad rules, tax plans, and a regulator in the works
Before any operators can go live, Alberta will lay out advertising guidelines and establish tax rates this fall. These two pillars will form the basis of the new Canadian regulations market. It will also help ensure the launch with consumer protection and accountability at its core.
A new oversight body called the Alberta iGaming Corporation will be established to manage operator licensing, enforcement, and compliance. It will be similar to Ontario's Alcohol and Gaming Commission. Leading up to the launch, Alberta will host consultations with a range of groups, including:
Prospective iGaming operators
Land-based Alberto casinos
Indigenous and First Nations stakeholders
These discussions will cover some of the most sensitive topics, including responsible advertising and the possibility of banning active athletes from gambling ads. The latter restriction was already adopted in Ontario gambling regulations.
Why Alberta is moving forward
Until now, the sole regulated online casino gambling option in the region has been Play Alberta, a government-run site. However, unregulated or "grey market" Ontario casinos dominate the space, with Nally stating that they account for up to 90% of online gambling activity in the province.
Besides, the increasing popularity of online games in Canada highlights the demand for secure, well-regulated options nationwide.
“I will be going back to my cabinet colleagues in the fall, and we’re going to be talking about advertising standards and tax rates. And then we’re going to make those difficult decisions," Nally added.
The goal of launching a regulated market is to crack down on grey market gambling and bring that revenue back into Alberta's economy. And create a safer, more transparent environment for players in the process.
Ontario’s influence on Alberta’s strategy
Following Ontario's successful model, Alberta isn't just winging it. Ontario has had a regulated iGaming market since April 2022. It set a national precedent and presented new standards for licensing, advertising, and oversight. And Alberta is clearly taking notes.
Ontario’s open market helped reduce the influence of grey market sites and boosted tax revenue, all while giving players more choices. Alberta sees a similar path forward, and if its predecessor’s numbers are any indication, there’s a solid foundation for optimism.
As provinces go, Ontario and Alberta are now shaping the future of online gambling in Canada.
What this means for online gambling in Canada
With Alberta joining Ontario in the regulated space, momentum is building for broader changes in how Canadian online casinos approach gambling. Other provinces may follow, especially if Alberta's market is smooth and profitable.
As a result, players there can look forward to more secure options, improved oversight, and increased game variety. Operators, meanwhile, are closely watching for Alberta’s final ad and tax decisions, which are expected this fall.
This is a turning point for casinos and gambling regulations in Canada, and if the Alberta model hits the mark, it won’t be the last one!
