UKGC fines Betfred £825,000 over AML and social responsibility failures

Betfred has received a $1.10 million fine for serious social responsibility and anti-money laundering (AML) breaches.

The UK Gaming Commission recently issued a £825,000 ($1.10 million) fine for Betfred's failures in terms of social responsibility and anti-money laundering. The failures are linked to gaming machines in their betting shops.

Formal fine and action required

Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Ltd, which trades as Betfred Casino and bookmaker, is expected to receive a formal warning and will be required to undergo a third-party audit to ensure AML compliance and that it meets safer gambling requirements.

This is the second enforcement case for the company in two years. In 2023, the company paid a £3.25 million settlement for similar failings.

According to the UKGC, Betfred has been unable to effectively identify and manage money laundering risks associated with players making use of their B3 gaming machines.

While they do make use of machine alerts and daily reports, they are not able to assess the overall customer spending or pinpoint money laundering and terrorist financing risks.

On top of that, the company also lacks effective policies for identifying customers who are subject to financial sanctions.

The company's thresholds for checking customers’ source of income are not risk-based, as reviews are only triggered at £15,000 in losses or £125,000 in stakes over 12 months.

Social responsibility failings

With social responsibility issues like a lack of adequate identification of spending patterns, it’s a danger to online casino players, as it can easily lead to gambling harm.

The investigation shows that customer interactions don’t take place when risk indicators appear. And when they occur, they are not conducted in a way to minimise harm.

In essence, interactions don’t meet the standards for UK online casinos and land-based establishments. The company also fails in assessing the effectiveness of its interventions.

UKGC is on a roll, as this is the second operator fined a massive amount for AML and safer gambling failures. Recently, Videoslots received a £650,000 fine from the Gambling Commission.

According to the Commission Director of Enforcement, John Pierce, the failings identified in the 2024 compliance assessment may have been mainly technical breaches rather than driven by specific customer examples, but that does not make it any more acceptable.

Pierce stated that the thresholds are too high and there are insufficient risk assessment practices in place. He added that the regulatory body acknowledges improvements the operator has already made since the issues were identified.

And that the independent audit will be key in confirming these changes are sustained, so the operator can continue to be fully compliant in meeting the social responsibility and anti-money laundering requirements.

What Betfred has to say

Betfred has stated that it is looking into its AML and social responsibility policies. Following the review of their UK-based betting shops, they are further strengthening these policies to protect their customers in the future.

Mark Pearson, Betfred’s head of corporate affairs and communications, says that during the review, no evidence of criminal spending in their shops has been found. And Betfred is committed to ensuring a secure betting experience for all its players.

The UKGC also noted that the failings are primarily linked to retail gaming machine operations and not their online gambling activities.

The upcoming audit is expected to focus on several areas, including strengthening Betfred's customer monitoring systems and improving their staff training. Plus, they have to make sure they have the proper measures in place for a more secure gameplay.

With the UKGC determined to enforce secure gambling regulations in the UK, it’s vital for operators to check for potential risks and ways they can improve to avoid future fines.
