Top 5 Land-Based Casinos in Portugal You Shouldn't Miss

Portugal has more licensed casinos than most visitors realise, and the five best-known ones are worth the trip for completely different reasons.

All five are regulated by SRIJ, the same authority behind the SRIJ-authorised online casinos.

1. The famous Casino Estoril

Estoril is the place (with a capital "P") most people mean when they say "Portuguese casino". It sits 18km west of Lisbon, opened in 1916, and has been trading on old-world fame ever since.

The gaming floor runs to roughly 27,000 square feet, carries over 1,000 slot machines and tables that cover roulette, blackjack, baccarat, punto banco, poker, and Banca Francesa.

Where it gets interesting is that many add Casino Estoril and Ian Fleming's Casino Royale in the same sentence. Estoril is usually named as the inspiration for Casino Royale, and for once, the story holds up.

In August 1941, the double agent Duško Popov sat down at the baccarat table with tens of thousands of dollars of MI6 money and pushed the lot at a wealthy Liechtensteiner, purely to humiliate him.

2. The modern Casino Lisboa

Casino Lisboa is the newest of the five listed land-based casinos here and makes no attempt to hide it.

Lisboa opened on 19 April 2006 inside the Pavilhão do Futuro, rebuilt for the job by architect Fernando Jorge Correia.

The interior still feels more like a world's fair exhibit that decided to stay instead. Slots sit across three floors, and you can enjoy more than 1,000 of them as well as 20+ table games. It also arrived with a fight attached.

Lisboa was the first Portuguese casino built inside a major city rather than a tourist zone, and critics argued at the time that putting a gaming floor on a Metro line made access too easy. That debate never fully closed.

3. Casino da Madeira and the architecture

The architecture is the headline here. The casino is a low circular drum ringed with white concrete buttresses, sitting above Funchal Bay as part of the Casino Park complex.

It looks like a squat cousin of Niemeyer's Brasília cathedral, because it is one. Designed in Paris in 1966, completed in 1976, and to this day, the only Niemeyer building on Portuguese soil.

The gaming floor is the smallest of the five: around 200 slot machines, plus roulette, blackjack, baccarat, and Texas Hold'em. Nobody flies to Madeira for the table selection.

On a warm night, it's the best-sited casino floor in the country, judged purely on the view from outside the room.

4. The northern Casino da Póvoa

Let's start with the news, because it changes what you'll find. In May 2026, French operator Groupe Lucien Barrière won the Póvoa de Varzim concession, which ended decades of almost entirely domestic ownership across Portuguese casinos. Estoril-Sol walked away from it.

Locals name it the Casino of the North, and the scale backs that up. The floor runs to roughly 27,000 square feet, and there are around 700 slots and 20 table games, which puts it level with Estoril on size if not in polish.

The catch is timing. A refurbishment programme has been announced but not completed, so the floor plan, machine count and table mix you find in the next months may not match anything published before the handover.

5. Casino Espinho for the poker players

Espinho is the clearest poker pick on this list, because it's built around a single strength. Solverde's first venue opened in 1974, sits 15 to 20 minutes south of Porto, and runs the Solverde Poker Season alongside many other regular tournaments.

The floor holds more than 700 slot machines and 20+ tables (Caribbean Stud, roulette, blackjack, and Banca Francesa, the Portuguese dice game you won't find outside the country). It's also the only Portuguese land-based casino that has bingo.

It's the closest of the five to a proper beach, and the Baccará restaurant runs shows from Wednesday to Sunday, so there's a reason to stay beyond the casino entertainment.

For nights you'd rather stay in

There are plenty of Portuguese online casinos for the days you don't fancy the drive. Online gives you a range that no physical floor can match.

Estoril's 1,000-odd machines are a lot of slots for a building, but it's nothing next to a licensed site's library of online slots, and you get live dealer tables and a range of table games, as well as a welcome offer on top.
