The UK Gambling Commission announces new deposit limit rules as 1.4 million adults face gambling harm in the UK.
Most people think that they have gambling under control. But the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is waving a red flag with the argument and warning that the number of players left in distress by online gambling is climbing.
For the UK gambling industry to maintain both responsible gambling (RG) practices and transparency, safeguards are not optional. They are necessary, as without them, the risks for at-risk players will only continue to grow.
A list of new rules
The UKGC recently put into place new rules to make deposit limits clearer and more consistent. They are aimed at UK online casinos to help strengthen practices for playing responsibly and provide greater protection for players.
According to the official release, operators must now make sure that deposit limits only reflect the amount a player pays into their account. These limits must exclude withdrawals, winnings, or losses. This clarification aims to help players understand exactly how much they spend at the casino.
Improvements and tools
The Commission says the new rules will be fully enforced by 30 June 2026. This will give operators some time to update their systems and make the RG tools available to players (e.g., a budget calculator).
The improvements to the rules will be implemented in different stages, and a key milestone is the set of previously announced changes coming into effect on the end of October this year. These changes will require all online casinos to do the following:
Send reminders to players every six months to review their accounts.
Simplify the process for decreasing or increasing the deposit limits.
Implement a free-text option to help players with setting financial limits.
Make deposit pages and limit links available and visible.
Give immediate attention to players wanting to decrease their financial limit.
Transparency over transactions
The UKGC said that these updates will provide clarity for consumers in terms of helping players maintain control over their gambling activity. The regulator also reminded operators to prevent impulsive overspending by players.
The rules are part of the Commission’s wider strategy to ensure a fairer and safer gambling environment across UK online casinos. By standardising how play limits are applied, the UKGC aims to eliminate confusion between deposit, loss and net spend controls.
The reform represents a positive step towards better self-management tools that are simplified and encourage players to gamble responsibly.
UK adults affected by gambling harm
The main reason for the new policy is the troubling findings from the latest report by the UKGC, which revealed that approximately 1.4 million adults in the UK alone are affected bygambling addiction.
This clearly shows the need for tighter gambling regulations in the UK and in general. However, the estimate has been challenged by the Betting & Gambling Council (BGC).
The industry has been under pressure to "pay more", and the former PM Gordon Brown gave a proposal that the gambling duty could be increased by up to GDP 3 billion to fund social programs.
Focus on player protection
The UKGC emphasised that the new rules' goal is not restricting the freedom of players. They want to help them make informed choices and reduce the risk of harmful behaviour, as clear deposit limits allow to set lower and more realistic boundaries.
The regulator continues its work with different operators, charities, and researchers. The goal is to help strengthen RG initiatives and improve the understanding of the public as well as show its ongoing commitment to creating a safer and more transparent gambling in the UK.
