Safer Gambling Week 2025 is a ‘Time to Reflect’ on gambling habits and a reminder of the available self-regulation tools.
Safe play and responsible gambling are a key focus of operators, companies and players all across the industry. However, each year, there's a special week-long period with a great focus on promoting and teaching RG practices for the well-being of all.
Safer Gambling Week 2025 has launched in the UK and across the world in another annual effort to promote and offer help. It’s the eighth year of the initiative, and more is being done to create and foster a safer gambling environment than ever before.
What is Safer Gambling Week?
Safer Gambling Week (SGW) is an important part of the industry’s focus and efforts to help gamblersplay responsibly and safely.
This year, SGW campaigns run from 17 to 23 November and focus on engaging as many people as possible. That's done through media outreach and digital platforms.
The main goal of the campaigns is to raise awareness, promote the safe play practices available and help those in need.
In the UK, the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), Bingo Association, and British Amusement Catering Trade Association (BACTA) lead the way. They are supported by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) and various political figures.
The theme of the year encourages proactive engagement and encourages individuals to take time to reflect on their gaming habits. While also reminding them of their access to tools assisting with self-regulation.
Industry participation
There are over 200,000 employees of various gambling venues and online platforms that are taking part in the campaign. UK online casinos join in on promoting safer gambling messages via their websites, apps, physical signage and more.
At the same time, operators are offering better training for their staff on how they can identify and help vulnerable customers.
The CEO of BGC, Michael Dugher, praised the initiative's reach, saying that this is a great opportunity to promote the many tools and support options available that can help players stay in control.
He also continued by pointing out that this is another chance to show the commitment to upping the standards and measures to protect players.
Last year, the campaign got 25 million social media impressions, which led to a major increase in the use of RG tools like time-outs and deposit limits.
The hope for this year is to surpass these figures and show how the new technologies and platforms help with these goals.
Safety in every way
The UK Gambling Commission recently completed its four-part research series on illegal online gambling. In the final report, we see the increasing size of the black market as a cause for concern.
Despite the extensive analysis, the UKGC has stated that they are still unable to make a reliable estimate. In the series, the UKGC investigated consumer behaviour, enforcement strategies, and market risks.
The series revealed that many players useillegal casinos and sites, and more importantly, that they are either unaware of the legalities or deliberately do it that way to go around restrictions like self-exclusion.
According to the Commission, tackling illegal gambling requires coordinated efforts, ones that will include law enforcement, digital platforms and financial institutions.
The UKGC CEO, Andrew Rhodes, said that even though estimating the full scale of the problem is difficult, they have gained a better understanding. This also holds promise for a better and more successful approach and results.
Government backing
The UK government has made their strong support for SGW quite clear by aligning it with broader regulatory reforms outlined in the Gambling Act Review.
The ministers are dedicated to balancing consumer freedom with strong protection. Especially considering the growing concerns regarding problem gambling and youth exposure.
The campaign is endorsed by many parliamentarians. The Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) has also pledged to continue funding research and treatment services.
Global efforts
The United Kingdom and its response are just one example of how important RG initiatives are across the industry. SGW may just be one week a year, but focus on safe play and player protection is year-round.
Online casinos are getting better at promoting their RG tools, and authorities are stricter and uncompromising when it comes to safety.
All around the industry is offering better safer gambling guides, support that is easily available, and numerous resources with the goal to help or educate.
