In a CasinoWow exclusive interview, Yggdrasil shares its inspiration and creative process behind the development of its latest game release: Goals of Olympus BoltLock™.

Yggdrasil is combining two of the biggest player obsessions in its new slot, Goals of Olympus BoltLock™, out on 9 July. Football and Greek mythology find their way into this winning formula, with familiar slot mechanics paired with new ones designed to bring players together.

We got an early look at the game and sat down with Marcin Tomala, Senior Game Designer at Yggdrasil, to find out what makes it one to watch ahead of its release.

CW: Football-themed slot games have become increasingly popular around major international tournaments like the World Cup. What was Yggdrasil's vision for creating Goals of Olympus BoltLock™, and how did you approach the football theme differently from other games in the market?

MT: Football is one of the world's most recognisable and universally loved sports, so we wanted to combine that excitement with another timeless favourite: Greek mythology. We try to spice our game up, so instead of creating a classic football experience, we imagined what would happen if the Gods of Olympus entered the stadium. That gave us a fresh, light-hearted game that's fun and approachable.

CW: What was the artistic vision behind the design and audio choice, and how does it support the game's theme and atmosphere?

MT: From the beginning, we wanted the game to feel bright, energetic, and welcoming. The visuals embrace a casual style, expressive god characters, and plenty of visual effects that reinforce the excitement of every goal-like moment.

The soundtrack and sound effects were designed to blend the grandeur of mythology with the atmosphere of a lively football match, creating an experience that feels both epic and playful.

CW: Yggdrasil is renowned for its innovative Game Engagement Mechanics (GEMs). What mechanic influences the gameplay experience in Goals of Olympus BoltLock™?

MT: The gameplay revolves around building momentum through our proprietary BoltLock™ mechanic. Every win triggers a full respin, allowing players to stay in the action while progressively unlocking additional reel positions. As more positions become available, the number of winning ways increases to 3,125, creating a natural sense of progression.

Once the entire grid has been unlocked, players gain access to Extra Lives and Multipliers, transforming the gameplay into a more dynamic and rewarding finale where every cascade can significantly increase the excitement.

CW: Can you walk us through the development process of a slot game? When creating a new title, what typically comes first: the mathematical model, gameplay mechanics, special features, visual identity, or the narrative concept?

MT: I wish it was so easy to put into schema. In fact, there's no single formula, as every project has its own starting point. Sometimes it's an idea for a mechanic, sometimes it's a strong visual concept or theme that inspires the entire experience.

For Goals of Olympus BoltLock™, the core gameplay progression and the fantasy of divine football evolved together, allowing the mechanics, mathematics, visuals, and presentation to reinforce one another.

Throughout development, every discipline works closely together to ensure the final product feels cohesive and entertaining.

CW: What do you hope players will find most appealing about Goals of Olympus BoltLock™ after their first few sessions?

MT: I do hope players enjoy the combination of fresh aesthetics with satisfying progression. The mechanics are easy to understand, with every spin having the potential to build toward something bigger.

Combined with its playful theme and memorable characters, I think it's the kind of game that's easy to pick up and enjoyable to come back to.
