A 2025 survey shows that around 18% of Swedes take part in online casino gameplay and around 24% in online betting.
A recently-published survey revealed stats pointing toward rapid growth within the digital gambling sphere of Sweden’s gambling market.
Based on the stats, about one in six Swedes (18%) enjoy playing online casino games. And around one in five (24%) take part in online betting activity.
The survey was conducted from the 3rd to the 17th of July 2025. There were about 3,463 respondents, of whom 1,004 were still actively engaging in online betting.
There was a nearly equal split with 501 casino players and around 503 bettors. The demographics indicate 55% men and 44% women, with an average age of 39 to 42 years.
About two-thirds of these players are in full-time employment with a monthly income averaging between 30,000 and 40,000 SEK.
The data also revealed that more than half (53%) play monthly with daily gambling at 8% for men and 4% for women. The daily gambling increases to 18% among players aged 50 to 75.
It’s important to note that monthly spending in Sweden is limited. So, the most common spending levels are either under 99 SEK or ranging from 200 to 999 SEK. Only about 17% spend 1000 SEK or more.
Participants also revealed that they had lost more than they had won. About one-third said they broke even. But only 3% had reported winning large sums.

Game preferences among participants
It’s safe to say that in online gaming, online slots are still dominating all around. Based on the survey data, that’s very much accurate among Swedish players too.
About 49% of participants favoured online slots, with 28% being regular slots and 21% specially focused on jackpot slots.
The stats also showed that women had a stronger preference for the reels than men. Around 55% of women preferred slots in comparison to the 45% of men.
Betting stats showed that football was the most bet-on sport, standing at 63%. It is followed by horse racing (30%) and hockey (29%). Svenska Spel was the most recognised betting brand. About 86% of players are aware of the brand, and 64% have played there.
In terms of brand recognition, LeoVegas Casino took the lead, with 69% recognition and the highest play rate. Hot on its heels were Bet365, Unibet, and Betsson.
Some concerns brought to light
The survey highlighted the growing exposure to unlicensed gambling, with about 18% of players saying they’ve used sites without a license by the Swedish Gambling Authority. A concerning 65% stated that they do not know how to check whether a casino is licensed or not.
Aside from regulatory concerns, casino bonuses were another big friction factor. A whopping 27% of the 35% players who have used bonuses reported problems.
One of the biggest issues in terms of bonuses was unclear terms and conditions. About 45% of players also reported difficulty withdrawing their winnings.
Primarily, 78% said the bonus T&Cs were too long and unclear, and that the biggest issue was regarding withdrawals.
All this shows that even with gambling participation growing in Sweden, there are many gaps that need to be considered, e.g., what issues Swedes are encountering and why some of them are opting for offshore platforms.
It seems that Swedes are looking for more flexibility and options. But the government has responded by tightening the Swedish gambling regulations.
The logic is that player protection is a top priority and the authorities are looking for ways to protect the punters from the risks that come along with offshore play.
These include weaker protections, a lack of RG measures and less transparency.
But is tightening the rules the way to go? Or is a more balanced approach between player protection and player satisfaction more appropriate?
