KSA wins Bronze Effie for responsible gambling campaign

The KSA is awarded a Bronze Effie Award in recognition of its efforts to promote safer gameplay in a growing market.

One theme that has been carried out throughout 2025 is the drive towards more safe and responsible play practices. Responsible gambling has been a key topic for a while, but this year, it is a primary focus, something that will continue in the years to follow as well.

A good example is the Netherlands Gambling Authority (Kansspelautoriteit, KSA), which has been successfully promoting safer gameplay in its growing online gambling market.

In recognition, the authority has earned a Bronze Effie for its most recent RG campaign.

‘Take Back Your Life, Take a Gambling Break’

Since the legalisation of online gambling in the Netherlands (in 2021), we’ve seen a rapid expansion within the market. And while this is good for the Dutch online casinos and the blossoming opportunities, it has also increased concerns regarding gambling addiction.

The main priority for gaming authorities is to provide players with a secure and safe gaming space. And this involves creating responsible gambling campaigns that boost awareness and shift players towards taking a more responsible gambling-focused gaming approach.

KSA received the Bronze Effie Award for its campaign ‘Take Back Your Life, Take a Gambling Break’.

The campaign won in the social category and received much praise for its innovative approach. KSA decided that it doesn't want to focus on stigma or fear, but instead introduced more hope, recovery, and personal empowerment.

Target market

Three main groups were targeted. This includes frequent gamblers, problem gamblers, and the relatives and loved ones of those affected by gambling behaviour.

What makes the campaign noteworthy is that it doesn’t go on the generic or expected route of emphasising all the negative consequences of gambling addiction. Instead, the KSA has chosen to highlight positive stories of recovery.

The understanding being that many players who lose control have a desire to reclaim their lives. Which in the campaign is made tangible using relatable narratives featuring daily joys from attending parties to attending sports matches, celebrating Christmas, or even playing the guitar.

All of these are examples of small, joyful moments that tend to be overshadowed by gambling.

The slogan ‘Take Back Your Life, Take a Gambling Break’ urges towards pausing, reflecting, and regaining control instead of just waiting for problems to escalate.

The KSA has been determined to position responsible gambling as a pathway to freedom and fulfilment. And with these campaigns, they frame recovery as something that is not just desirable but achievable.

The campaign has successfully managed not to alienate its target audience and avoid evoking feelings of shame. Instead, it inspired a fuller life with its relatable and compassionate messages.

Creative collabs

The campaign was created in partnership with FCB Amsterdam, with a joint creative team that worked hard to make sure the visuals and narrative were relevant to the audience.

The message felt even more authentic with the added everyday Dutch experiences. This collaboration shows how regulators can work effectively together with agencies to create impactful social campaigns.

With the Bronze Effie in hand, the KSA has shown that RG initiatives can be empathetic and award-winning. It’s also an invitation and encouragement for other gaming authorities as they find better ways to inspire responsible gambling among players.

The KSA has set a new benchmark for responsible gambling communication with their very successful ‘Take Back Your Life, Take a Gambling Break’ campaign.

One that may just be the inspiration behind future initiatives focusing on hope, recovery, and empowerment. As the gambling market evolves, the authority’s involvement and commitment to player safety will remain vital.
